The shortest way versus the best way

The shortest way versus the best way
« on: June 26, 2017, 10:08:19 AM »
When I use to commute, I always tried to take the shortest or fastest way to my destination. Now that I am riding a scooter I no longer do that. I find myself taking the best way.  The most scenic, the most interesting, the safest way. You know, the best way.  On a particularly nice day, I will double my miles going home just to get a little more riding in. I guess what I am trying to say is that driving use to be a means to get to a destination. Now, riding is an important part of the destination.  Guess I'm stating a little of my scootering philosophy here.  I would like to hear some of yours.

We have learned, thanks to the modern scooter, to enjoy the journey! One of us has a parting signature, "Why ride one mile when ten will do."

Yes I can relate to this. I seem to be finding excuses to add some miles.

Being retired and no longer commuting, I only ride for pleasure.  That usually means taking the longest, most pleasant route I can find.

I think I like to take the best route, which may be a mixture of both the best and efficient. If it's a long trip and I'm expected to be somewhere at a certain time, then an efficient route is needed. But at the same time I tend to avoid heavy traffic areas, or routes that I would feel are dangerous to 2-wheel riders. So that makes me select a more scenic, or less congested ways.

My wife loves more scenic ways, but 5 out of 10 times we get lost, and my bladder nearly explodes from not finding any rest stops.

Im really looking forward to next saturday as i have a ride planned to the south of our island which involves a really nice mountain pass and loads of coastal roads.
Just need to get through my last shift at work and then the 8000 mile commute to get home first :)

Whoa! 8000 miles? That sounds like a 7-10 day ride.

So, you live in the U.K. and work in the Philippines? I'm easily confused. By the way, my commute is 15 miles across surface streets in the north Atlanta, Georgia suburbs.  Its awful, just awful.  ;) ;) ;)
